What Is a Page Note and How Is It Different from Highlighting?
Most reading tools stop at highlighting: select text, colour it, move on. But a lot of what you want to remember about a page isn't in the text — it's your reaction to the whole article. That's what a page note is for.
What is a page note
A page note (sometimes called a web page sticky note) is a remark attached to the entire page, keyed to its URL, rather than to a sentence you selected. Think of it as a sticky note slapped on the article itself:
- "Read this properly this weekend."
- "Source for the Q3 report — check the methodology section."
- "Disagree with the conclusion; find a counter-argument."
None of those belong to a specific quote. They belong to the page.

Page note vs highlight: the difference that matters
| Highlight / annotation | Page note | |
|---|---|---|
| Anchored to | A selected piece of text | The whole page (URL) |
| Best for | "This sentence is worth keeping" | "Here's my take on the whole article" |
| Shows up | On the words | On the page, as a note |
| Example | "Local-first sync is the key differentiator." | "Use this as the opening example in the sync post." |
They aren't competitors. You highlight the line and attach a page note explaining why the page matters. Together they turn a reading session into something you can act on later.
When to reach for a page note
- Triaging. Open ten tabs, drop a one-line page note on each: keep / skip / cite-later.
- Research. Note which source supports which claim before you've written a word.
- Disagreements. Record why you push back, so the note survives away from the original text.
- Later reading. A page note is a better "read later" than a bare bookmark, because it carries why you saved it.
